A two-character play by a new playwright has turned out to be the surprise hit of the Broadway season. The author is William Gibson whose first novel, The Cobweb, made the best-seller list three years ago. Two for the Seesaw is a comedy drama about two young people cast adrift in New York, who meet by chance and ‘become involved in all the torments and delights of a prolonged love affair.
Henry Fonda plays the male lead with the same professional skill that marked his performances in Mr. Roberts and The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. But it was Anne Bancroft, critics say, making her first legitimate stage appearance, who melted the hearts of both critics and audience. Her performance is described as “brilliant” and “enchanting.”
